Building a Shared Catalogue of Sponge Measures

Online workshop - 18 July 2025

SpongeScapes recently hosted an online collaborative workshop with partners from both the SpongeScapes and SpongeWorks Horizon Europe projects. The aim is to develop a comprehensive catalogue of sponge measuresto help water and land managers better understand, identify, compare and implement the wide range of available solutions to enhance the sponge functioning of landscapes.

But what exactly is a sponge landscape? And what individual sponge measures can make it happen? While some measures are well known, others remain less familiar or are known under different names. The catalogue aims to clarify this complexity by offering a structured, accessible, and practical classification of measuresthat will help identify and compare these measures and encourage their adoption across Europe.

During the online workshop, discussions focused on questions such as: how can we distinguish between two different measures and two variations of the same one? How should these measures be organized and classified to best support decision-making?

The ultimate goal is to provide a user-friendly, exhaustive, and practical tool to guide stakeholders in selecting and applying nature-based solutions to improve territorial resilience to droughts and floods.
